It is evident that Nigeria, particularly Lagos, faces a significant housing deficit. The United Nations emphasizes adequate housing as a fundamental human right, essential for social and economic development. Over the years, the housing shortage has worsened, with millions of housing units needed.

The past administration’s performance in addressing this challenge has been subpar, delivering only a fraction of the required housing units. The current government, led by Governor Sanwo-Olu, has made efforts to bridge the gap through various housing schemes. However, delays and financial constraints have hindered timely possession and infrastructure development for these schemes.

To alleviate this housing crisis, experts and stakeholders stress the importance of strategic, creative approaches. Utilizing sustainable local building materials, encouraging vertical expansion, and partnering with the private sector for extensive housing initiatives are seen as crucial steps. Additionally, streamlining bureaucratic processes and amending land and property registration laws to ease access to land for housing are recommended.

Addressing the housing deficit requires a multifaceted approach, combining government efforts, private sector involvement, and community collaboration to ensure affordable, accessible housing for all citizens, ultimately enhancing the overall quality of life.
